There is a profound difference between a manicured event venue and a living, breathing working ranch. Here at Big Oak Ranch, the soil is turned by the cattle and horses, the mornings are greeted by the eager chorus of our rooster, chickens, ducks, and honeybees, and the air carries the authentic scent of cedar, fresh hay, mountain pine, and the Shenandoah River.
We invite you to step into a rhythm defined not by clocks, but by the gentle sway of our small fruit grove, the soft nicker of our horses, and the warmth of a crackling hearth. This is not just a backdrop – it is our home, and we are honored to share its peaceful, rugged grace with you.
The Heartbeat of the Ranch
Meet the Animals
Every soul on Big Oak Ranch contributes to the quiet, beautiful rhythm of our daily life. Step close and meet our cherished companions.
The Gentle Giants
Our Horses
With soft, knowing eyes and spirits as wide as our pastures, our retired trail horses at The Estate are the heartbeat of the meadow. They carry the quiet, grounding strength of the ranch in every slow stride.
The Camera Divas
Mini Highlands
Guests can strike a pose with our Mini Highland calves and sometimes participate in their bottle feeding and care. These sisters are the sweetest and cutest additions on the ranch and enjoy the attention of our guests.
The Free-Range Guardians
The Heritage Flock
A colorful assembly of breeds clucking softly through The River pasture. They spend their afternoons turning the soil, creating their own drama, and leaving behind rich, golden-yolk eggs for our guests to purchase and enjoy.
The Pond Patrol
Our Ducks
Our Khaki Campbell and Pekins offer comedic interludes. Playful, eccentric, and perpetually busy at The River, they fill our afternoons with delightful splashes and cheerful quacking. They offer guests fresh, farm-raised eggs that are larger and naturally richer in protein and nutrients, providing a deliciously different take on our beloved chicken eggs.Â
Always at Your Heel
The Farm Pups
Dakota, our Blue Texas Heeler, and Sawyer, our Terrier rescue, are often found frolicking on the trail and making friends with our guests at The River. From dawn boundary checks to warm, lazy afternoon naps on the porch, our dogs keep watch over Big Oak Ranch with fierce loyalty and endlessly wagging tails. They help to protect our flocks by providing early warnings of predators… chasing off occasional foxes, eagles, and hawks.
The Quiet Watchers
The Cabin Cats
Sleek, independent, and always perched in the perfect patch of morning sun. Our resident barn and cabin cats at The River add a warm, purring comfort to the evening fireside. They’re going to come say hello and will love spending time in your lap! Despite what they may tell you, they ARE NOT allowed in the cabins.
The Sweet Meadow Workers
The Honeybees
Deep in our blossoming fruit grove and among our native plants and trees, thousands of gentle honeybees hum a soothing song. They weave the golden, sweet story of our land, pollinating our wildflowers and filling our hives with wild nectar.
HONEST & HAND-GATHERED
From the Coop to the Table
Every morning at Big Oak Ranch begins with the soft clucking of our free-range hens and the golden hum of honeybees in the fruit grove. We hand-gather each warm, speckled egg and bottle our wildflower honey raw, preserving the authentic flavors of our land.
What started as a passion for wholesome, self-sustained living has grown into a small-batch harvest we’re honored to share as long as supplies are available. Our products bring the true, rustic spirit of ranch life straight to your family’s table.
